This is my fifth visit to Afghanistan. In the past, I have documented an army base, a PRT or Provincial Reconstruction Team, the National Solidarity Program, water and sanitation projects, burkhas on the street, children in schools and the daily life of the Afghan people. This time I have chosen to photograph typological portraits.
I have returned to a totally different Afghanistan than I have known before; what was dry and dusty in my past trips is now surprisingly green. I have decided to use this pictorial landscape as the background for my portraits. My subjects are simple people: farmers, beekeepers, venders and policemen. The portraits presented here were taken mainly in the northern Afghan Balkh Province.
