The Forgotten War

The conflict in Chechnya has entered its thirteenth year. On New Year's Eve 1994, Russia failed to overthrow the elected Chechen government, and they sent the Russian Army "to re-establish the rule of law and order." Fierce resistance eventually forced Russian troops to withdraw two years later. In 1999, the Russian army invaded Chechnya a second time, causing a conflict even deeper and more destructive than the first one.
