Kosovo 1998

In 1998, I documented the plight of Kosovo Albanians caught in the battle between the Serbian military and the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). This battle in mid 1998 resulted in massive destruction and the displacement of hundreds of ethnic Albanian Kosovars from their homes and villages. The tactics used by Serbian forces were often similar to those employed in the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia-Herzegovina: paramilitary and special police units swept into villages executed selected residents on the spot and drove the remainder into the surrounding hills. They then looted and burned schools, health clinics and homes in their wake. A U.N. survey found that in 150 of 300 villages in Kosovo, 60% off all structure had been destroyed or heavily damaged - another humanitarian catastrophe in a region already scarred by years of warfare.
