The Coney Island Mermaid Parade 2009

The Mermaid Parade takes place every year by the sea on Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City. The tradition began in 1983 when it was founded by the no-profit arts group The Coney Island USA.

The Mermaid Parade occurs on the first Saturday after the summer solstice, around the third week of June. It celebrates the beginning of the summer season as well as the official opening of the Atlantic Ocean. It also celebrates the sand, sea, salt air, and the spirit of Coney Island and the arts.

In 2009, regardless of the rainy weather, hundreds of mermaids ( partially nude), mermen, Neptunes and sea creatures of every shape and size -- all in extraordinary handmade marine costumes -- together with musicians and spectators, descended upon Coney Island to celebrate a New York tradition: The Coney Island Mermaid Parade.
